Chile

Though 72 percent of its population is Catholic, Chile’s public face has a conflicted religious profile. Spontaneous shrines, often markers of a tragic death, dot the country’s roadsides with crosses and religious statues. Hundreds of thousands journey to remote Marian feasts held throughout the country. But Chileans otherwise interiorize their religion, and dress and décor tend to be secular with little evidence of religious jewelry, bumper stickers, and devotionalism.
